Tao’s Path

Another Path of Being

The Grand Palais hosts an exhibition, organized by the National Museums Assembly and the Guimet Museum, resolutely bold and ambitious, which is also intended to be initiatory, Offering an almost spiritual journey to the heart of Taoist culture and art through a transversal approach with a set of 250 works.

To mark “Tao’s Path – A Different Spiritual Approach” which presents a vast field of investigation for the iconographic decryption and to present the Taoist art that is often mistaken with Chinese art, the curator of the exhibition, Catherine Delacour, chief curator at the Musée des Arts Asiatiques Guimet, has opted for a thematic presentation in six fields. She began by the founding principle of cosmogenesis to liturgy to account for the particularism of this originally complex mindset which was codified and institutionalized in the 2nd century by becoming a religion with its pantheon, its rites and its religious authorities.

Tao’s Path

Taoist art is vision

The scenography was designed by Jean-Jacques Bravo and Sophie Roulet on the principle of dichotomy and complementarity of emptiness and fullness.

In order to succeed on an aesthetic level as well as from the symbolism of colors used, from the night blue to the celadon, it is not entirely convincing when small objects are dispersed in large volumes while large objects do not allow any recoil.

Having understood this, it must be noted that this exhibition is not for a general public and in this respect the screening of the documentary directed by Yves de Perretti, with a popularized approach of Taoism through its contemporary practice at its origin, and the in-depth consultation of the Catalogue or album are essential prerequisites for novices in Taoism.

For the neophyte visitor, trying to understand the Taoist art that merges with Chinese art implies knowing both the principles of the first and the specificities of the second.

Tao’s Path

Mysteries and Philosophy of Chinese Art

Such as the founding cosmogony, the precellency of Chinese writing, the fundamental aniconism that has evolved into a veneration of images for liturgical reasons, the philosophy of the Chinese landscape school with the mental preparation for the act of painting through meditation is an extension of gods and immortals.

Let yourself be immersed by the works presented and show curiosity of mind.

While some remain esoteric for the uninitiated, such as those that reproduce trigrams symbolizing the regression of time that leads to immortality, other works are more accessible by their resonance for example, the existence of “a hell” whose 16th century representation evokes the one of Jerome Bosch.

    Turner and his painters

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), already widely recognized in his lifetime, is today considered the greatest British landscape painter of the 19th century. He is considered to be the renovator of the genre, especially in his ultimate works, where tradition is overtaken by the dilution of forms in light. Turner is often perceived as the inspiration for impressionism (he never got to know) or even of abstract paintings.

Turner never ceased to want to transcribe in his painting the sensation of nature while continually drawing inspiration from a number of artists (mainly painters), glorious olds or contemporary bubbling rivals, to pursue his artistic quest. Exceptionally ambitious, Turner was in constant competition with past and present art perpetually wishing to perfect his talent. This revolutionary painter, in fact, is an heir, a continuator and a road companion.

    Turner and his painters

Turner, a native of London of modest origin, is a pure product of the young Royal Academy of Arts founded in 1768 and which advocated as the basis of its teaching copying according to the «masters», namely a small number of Renaissance or 17th century painters, considered the quintessence of the «Grand Style». Following this method throughout his career, Turner would build his way by making his own choices among the «inspirationists» both those advocated by academic traditions and the outside society . His career was influenced by the development of the London art scene with the creation of the first museums, the rise of public exhibitions and the art market.

It is this story that this exhibition aims to trace. By rediscovering the ancient works that Turner had himself selected, by confronting the artist with his beloved models or his challenged rivals, we follow the path of a creator who first wanted to be a painter, not just a landscaper, and who built all his work to be integrated into the pantheon of the greatest. Inseparably with them and against them, in order to define oneself …

      Cezanne (1839-1906)

Cézanne (1839-1906), whom a tenacious legend describes as the solitary «Master of Aix» who retreated to Provence, never really left the capital and the Ile-de-France. Between 1861 and 1905, he kept coming back and forth and drew his inspiration from it. His work bears witness to these trips during which he frequented the impressionists, Pissarro, Guillaumin, Renoir and Monet. Some of his friends like Doctor Gachet, in Auvers-sur-Oise, strongly supported him.

In Paris, Cézanne was confronted with both tradition and modernity. He found the «formulas» before exploiting them in Provence (more than twenty times he went to and from Paris to Provence). The exhibition sheds light on the major themes that he explored at the time: some views in Paris, the landscapes of Ile-de-France, nudes, still life and portraits.

His friendship with Zola was privileged. After 1890, critics, merchants, and collectors began to take an interest in his work. Cézanne showed himself attentive to this recognition which could only come from Paris. Thus, he made his mark in modern art world : the avant-garde considered him a precursor, «father to all», according to Picasso’s formula.

        The Bernard Frank Collection

The Guimet Museum Presents the Exhibition “Ofuda” Engraved Images from the Temples of Japan

The «Ofuda» project was born when the family of Professor Bernard Frank (1927-1996) entrusted their collection of xylograved pious images, which he had patiently gathered over forty years of wanderings throughout Japan, to the Collège de France and held the Chair of Japanese Civilization since 1979.

This collection of «Ofuda», rich in more than a thousand specimens, was constituted in a spirit of completeness and encyclopaedic synthesis that cannot fail to evoke the erudite passion with which Emile Guimet, a century earlier, had managed to assemble a collection of Buddhist statues of a quality and consistency that make it unique in the world.

          Toys and Men

This exhibition is organized by the Rmn-Grand Palais in collaboration with the Decorative Arts in Paris, and co-organized by the Helsinki Art Museum. It was presented at the Helsinki Art Museum from February 21st to May 20th 2012.

«The toy is the first initiation to art» said Charles Baudelaire. Thousands of toys from antiquity to date were gathered in this exhibition which was an exceptional showcase and was totally unprecedented by its scope and ambition: antique dolls, royal dolls, Barbies, trains, planes, boats, teddy bears, near life automata, video games battles, lead or plastic figurines, flying saucers, Noah’s arches and even a Santa Claus in a plane.

          Des Jouets et des Hommes
          Des Jouets et des Hommes

          Between Mimicry and Imagination

Toys and Men present a history of the Western toy and highlights its importance in man’s education since birth. The exhibition questions the ambiguous relationships that children have with miniature reproduction of the adult world.

Discoverinng the exhibition: Throughout the rooms, between the ritual of giving and the necessary renunciation at adulthood, the visitor is invited to discover or recognize toys linked to several generations of children. The route of the exhibition is punctuated by various chapters of which here are a few themes:

The world of animals: The teddy bear, the stick horse or rocking horse embodies the essential portrayals of animals in childhood. Farms, circuses and arches of Noah, which are home to many other species, are timeless sets of toys.

          The illusion of life

Automata or mechanical toys – like those of Fernand Martin who animates a violinist playing his instrument desperately or a door that only sweeps, fascinate by their mechanism and their disturbing illusions of life. Japanese lithographed metal robots and Robosapiens or Roboraptors later illustrate the naive or enthusiastic faith in technological innovations.

Girls’ toys, boys’ toys: Since Antiquity, predetermined roles are systematically distributed according to the sexes thus reproducing ancestral stereotypes. The heart of the exhibition beats between girls’ toys and boys’ toys. On one side, the world of intimacy, of the house and its dolls and on the other, the vast world populated by cars, trains, boats, planes up to spacecrafts. Without forgetting the war whose childish representations are closely related to the planetary conflicts that follow. Today, imaginary conflicts, inspired by super heroes and science fiction have progressively replaced the former lead soldiers. Video games are, to date, the preferred “toy-distraction” as well as the most lucrative in modern day societies.

            Heritage and Cultural Identity

Like the rest of Europe, sports occupy a significant place in Corsica, culturally, socio-economically and politically; their repercussions on the island’s society are considerable. This exhibition, (consisting of approximately 200 works: paper documents, medals, jerseys, trophies, photos, films, automotive etc..) will contribute, in particular, to the establishment of a heritage process and “cultural identity and legitimacy” in the sports field, at the level of men and objects, as well as a reflection to set some milestones, or more precisely to suggest some lines of research both for researchers, political decision-makers as well as the island’s sports and economic strategic actors.

            A Staged Sporting Experience

A Journey Marked by Sports Symbols

The scenography is based on vast basic plinths that install the objects without sacralizing them. The signage exploits the markings and bright colors of the sports world and a few characteristics of what it wishes to demonstrate: podiums, tracks, arena, etc… The trajectory is visualized by the staging of uniforms – deep sea divers, pilots, polar explorers, etc… hence introducing each theme.

Textile Art at the Museum of Modern Art, Paris

The Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris put the spotlights on textile art through the Decorum exhibition, which showcases more than a hundred carpets and tapestries signed by modern artists (Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso) and contemporary artists like (Dewar & Gicquel, Vidya Gastaldon). Decorum proposes to discover woven works, often unsuspected by major artists and the works of unjustly unknown artists such as (Guidette Carbonell). Anonymous pieces from different eras and regions are also exhibited to detect influences and engage confrontational discussions. These creations are both visual and tactile, aesthetic and functional, easily transportable carpets and tapestries transcend the usual boundaries of decorative arts and design. (Le Corbusier called his tapestries «Muralnomad»).

              Textile Art

              From Tradition to Innovation

Until the end of the 19th century, painters limited themselves to drawing cardboard to be woven or depicting oriental carpets in their paintings (Lotto, Holbein, Delacroix). During the 20th century, the European artistic avant-garde revolutionized the aesthetics and technique of textile art. Artists wove their own carpets, referring to ancient pieces or using ethnic and geometric motifs.

Often carrying a political or feminist message from the 1960s, carpets and tapestries have aroused a significant revival of interest since the 2000s. Young contemporary artists such as Caroline Achaintre and Pae White produced original woven pieces that integrate tradition, modernity or extra-western influences; they also experiment with new techniques, such as digital weaving.

              Reviving Textile Art

              Between Tradition and Modernity

The exhibition thus goes against the conventional ideas presenting tapestry as a minor or anachronistic art. It also allows to reconnect with a little known history of the museum which had an Art and Textile department Creation in the 1980s.

London artist Marc Camille Chaimowicz, guest artistic director, designed the exhibition’s original scenography in collaboration with architect Christine IlexBeinemeier. Jean-Philippe Antoine, professor of aesthetics, Chaimowicz offers a program of specific music which is broadcasted as a background in the exhibition.

Less known than his paintings and sculptures, Picasso’s ceramics occupy a major space amongst in his creations.

In the 1950s, Pablo Picasso used ceramics in parallel with his paintings. Touch-to-all genius and a true bulimic, he left us many pieces bearing symbols of the Mediterranean civilization.
